KEITH BENNETT OF ELLAND SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TEENAGE GIRL IN BRADFORD

In February 2006, a man named Keith Bennett, aged 35 and residing on Elizabeth Street in Elland, was convicted of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. The incident, which took place in the West Yorkshire area, led to Bennett being sentenced to six months in prison.

Despite his denial of any sexual activity with the minor, Bennett was found guilty by a jury following a trial held in October at Bradford Crown Court. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the case, with the prosecution, led by David Gordon, asserting that Bennett had touched the girl’s private parts during the incident.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Stephen Gullick, the recorder of Bradford, emphasized the gravity of Bennett’s actions, describing them as a “gross breach of trust.” The judge’s remarks underscored the serious nature of the offense and the impact on the victim.

Tim Stead, representing Bennett, argued that his client was suffering from an adjustment disorder, which could lead him to self-harm if he were to be imprisoned. However, the judge was clear in his stance, stating, “You do not accept your guilt. You maintain your innocence which you are perfectly entitled to do. What that demonstrates to me is that there is no constriction or remorse on your part. What you and others must understand if you behave in this way to girls of this age, is that you are bound almost to receive a prison sentence.”

As part of his sentence, Bennett was also ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years, a measure intended to monitor and prevent further offenses. The case highlights the ongoing concerns about child protection and the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions in the Elland and Bradford communities.
