KAYLEIGH BENSON'S HORRIFIC CRUELTY IN KINGSTON UPON HULL: DOG STARVATION TRAGEDY
Kayleigh Sinead Benson, born on February 25, 1993, and residing on Junella Close in Kingston upon Hull, was convicted in 2022 of a heinous act of animal cruelty that resulted in the death of her pet dog.The incident shocked the local community and drew attention to the severe neglect and suffering inflicted upon the American bulldog named Lexi.
According to court reports, Benson’s pet, Lexi, was found in a state of extreme emaciation, covered in her own urine and feces, and had been reduced to a skeletal frame due to prolonged starvation.
The tragic condition of the dog was so severe that her bones were visibly breaking down, a clear indication of the extended period of malnutrition she endured.
The case came to light when the RSPCA prosecutor, Phil Brown, detailed the events to the court.
On December 22, 2019, Benson contacted the PDSA, requesting assistance for her dog, claiming that Lexi had recently passed away.
Accompanied by a male companion, Benson took Lexi to a pet hospital, where she requested a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death.
The dog was wrapped in a blanket, and the male instructed staff not to unwrap her, citing her poor condition.
Veterinary examination revealed that Lexi was heavily soiled with urine, with urine scald present on her rear end.
The vet noted that she had very little fat and no muscle tissue remaining.
The entire side of her body was covered in feces, suggesting she had been living in her own waste for some time before her death.
The postmortem findings confirmed that Lexi’s organs lacked the necessary fat reserves, and her body was in a state of severe deterioration.
The examination also uncovered a plastic bag lodged within her large intestines.
Further analysis showed that Lexi’s bones were breaking down due to starvation, a condition caused by the body exhausting its muscle and fat stores for energy.
The veterinarian emphasized that Lexi had no underlying diseases; her suffering was solely due to a lack of proper nutrition.
The prolonged period of hunger, pain, and mental distress was deemed entirely avoidable, highlighting the cruelty of her treatment.
In court, Benson’s defense, represented by Emma Johnson, stated that Benson was “shocked and devastated” by the circumstances.
It was explained that Lexi had come into Benson’s care following an incident involving an ex-partner.
At the time of Lexi’s death, Benson was experiencing a particularly difficult period, having recently lost her father.
Johnson described her client’s emotional state as being “at the worst time of her life,” which contributed to her inability to properly care for the dog.
Judge’s sentencing included a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, along with 25 days of rehabilitation activities.
Benson was also ordered to pay £478 in costs, which would be deducted from her benefits.
Additionally, she was disqualified from owning any dogs for the next 10 years, a ban that will expire in January 2032.
The court’s decision underscores the seriousness of her actions and the importance of animal welfare laws in Kingston upon Hull.
