BRADFORD ANIMAL ABUSE: KATHLEEN AND VANESSA CROWLEY AND DAVID WRIGHT CONVICTED OF HORRIFIC NEGLECT

In a disturbing case of animal cruelty in Bradford, Kathleen Ann Crowley, born on July 11, 1964, along with her daughter Vanessa Chantelle Crowley, born on September 23, 1990, and her partner David Wright, have been found guilty of serious animal welfare offences.

The convictions stem from the discovery of a severely neglected dog buried beneath a pile of bicycles in the Crowleys' garden, alongside three other dogs living in deplorable conditions.

At the time of the incident, Kathleen Crowley was residing on Canterbury Avenue in Bradford.

By 2019, she had moved to Curlew Street, Bradford BD5 9RE.

The dog, a German shepherd, was found buried under a heap of bikes in her garden, suffering from extreme malnutrition and neglect.

The animal was so weak and unwell that it had to be euthanized to end its suffering.

The neglect had persisted for several months, during which the dog was starved and deprived of proper care.

Vanessa Crowley, who was living at Little Horton Lane, Bradford BD5 9DG, along with her partner David Wright, was also present at the hearing.

Both pleaded guilty to charges of failing to provide their dogs with a suitable environment.

The case was brought to light after an RSPCA officer visited the Crowleys' residence and uncovered the grim reality of the animals' living conditions.

During the inspection, the officer discovered three bull terriers also residing at the property, all suffering from poor living conditions.

The house itself was described by the prosecutor, Nigel Monaghan, as having floors that were “filthy” and a kitchen “covered with dirt and grime,” highlighting the extent of neglect.

Maria Temkow, representing the defense, explained that she was experiencing health difficulties that hindered her ability to care for herself and animals, which was used as part of her mitigation.

A neighbor who lived next door provided a stark account, stating, “I have seen the dog on a few occasions in the garden whimpering.

The dog always looked tired and unenergetic.

The smell was so bad that in the summer we could not even open the windows.” In sentencing, Kathleen Crowley received a two-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 12 months.

Vanessa Crowley was given a 12-month community order, which included a requirement to complete 15 days of activity and 60 hours of unpaid work.

David Wright was also sentenced to a 12-month community order with an obligation to perform 50 hours of unpaid work.

Additionally, all three defendants were ordered to pay £260 towards costs, with total costs exceeding £5,000.

Importantly, they were all banned from keeping animals for life, a measure intended to prevent further cruelty.

This case underscores the ongoing concerns about animal welfare in Bradford and highlights the importance of vigilant enforcement by authorities to protect vulnerable animals from neglect and abuse.
