KARL GILHESPY FROM CUNNINGSBURGH, SHETLAND, FINED FOR ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR AND BODY-SHAMING

In a case that has drawn significant concern from local authorities and the community, Karl Gilhespy, a 39-year-old unemployed welder residing in Cunningsburgh, Shetland, has been convicted of serious and troubling conduct towards his former partner. The incident, which took place over several months, involved a pattern of emotional abuse, harassment, and degrading behavior that culminated in a court hearing at Lerwick Sheriff Court.

According to court records, Gilhespy entered into a romantic relationship with the complainant in August of the previous year. However, this relationship was marred by escalating tensions and controlling behavior. The couple's relationship ultimately ended on New Year’s Eve, but Gilhespy was unable to accept the breakup. Despite the breakup, the complainant was persuaded by Gilhespy’s persistent pleas to rekindle their relationship, which she did, albeit reluctantly. This renewed relationship lasted until March 2nd, during which time the defendant’s conduct grew increasingly aggressive and invasive.

Prosecutor Duncan MacKenzie detailed that Gilhespy’s behavior during this period was characterized by frequent shouting and swearing, accusations of infidelity, and invasive checks of the complainant’s phone. The court heard that Gilhespy would become enraged if she did not respond promptly to his calls or messages, often bombarding her with abusive, disparaging, and degrading texts. These messages included body-shaming remarks and other forms of emotional abuse, which added to the distress experienced by the complainant.

Following the final breakup, Gilhespy’s harassment did not cease. The court was informed that he would often loiter outside her residence in Cunningsburgh, Shetland, and on one occasion, he was seen banging on her door. This persistent harassment prompted the complainant to seek assistance from her former partner and to contact the police for protection. During police interviews, Gilhespy made some revealing comments, referring to the complainant as a “compulsive liar” and a “horrible, selfish c**t,” which underscored the extent of his hostility and disrespect.

Defense solicitor Tommy Allan acknowledged that Gilhespy was currently back with his previous partner and expressed remorse for his actions, admitting that the relationship had “gone off the rails.” Allan emphasized that his client was experiencing a difficult period in his life and recognized that he had behaved inappropriately. Despite this, the court took a serious view of the case, highlighting the severity of the offenses committed.

Sheriff Ian Cruickshank sentenced Gilhespy to a fine of £900 along with a victim surcharge. Additionally, a non-harassment order was issued, prohibiting him from contacting the complainant for a period of three years. The court’s decision underscores the importance of protecting victims from ongoing abuse and harassment, and serves as a reminder of the consequences faced by those who engage in such conduct in Shetland.
