In a case that has shocked the local community, Karl Birchall, a 31-year-old man from Kirkby, was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl on Crosby Beach. The incident took place on September 30 of the previous year, and the case drew significant attention due to the nature of the offense and the location involved.

Birchall, a father of four, was initially brought to trial on charges of raping the young girl. However, the prosecution's case against him collapsed, and the charge of rape was dropped. Despite this, Birchall admitted to the court that he had carried out a sexual act on the underage girl while he was intoxicated. His admission came after he was arrested a few days following the incident and charged with the more serious offense of rape.

According to prosecutor Phil Astbury, Birchall was on Crosby Beach when he encountered the girl and her friends. The court heard that Birchall and the girl eventually began kissing, which escalated into him performing a sexual act, fully aware that she was only 14 years old. Birchall’s arrest and subsequent legal proceedings revealed a man who was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Judge John Roberts sentenced Birchall to three years in prison and also ordered him to sign the sexual offenders register for life, a measure that underscores the severity of his actions and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
