KAREN CRESWELL FROM WARD END SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT IN BIRMINGHAM

In a disturbing case that highlights severe neglect and cruelty towards animals, Karen Creswell, a resident of Bamville Road in Ward End, Birmingham, has been found guilty of multiple animal welfare offences. The case came to light in July 2020 when the RSPCA responded to urgent concerns about the living conditions and health of Creswell’s pets, which included an elderly dog named Sheba and two cats, Teddy and Venus.

Upon arrival at Creswell’s residence, investigators discovered a scene of utter neglect. The house was in a deplorable state, characterized by a thick layer of dirt, cluttered spaces, and a pervasive stench of animal waste. The floors were covered with animal faeces and urine, making walking hazardous and unhygienic. Despite the presence of litter trays around the home, all were overflowing with waste, indicating a lack of proper care and attention.

Inside the living room, the RSPCA inspector, Louise Marston, found Sheba, an elderly bull-terrier-cross, in a severely weakened condition. Sheba was sleeping and appeared to be suffering from multiple health issues. Her fur was patchy, especially around her eyes and back, due to an untreated skin condition. A large cyst was hanging from her underside, further evidence of neglect. Her long nails suggested she had not been exercised or cared for properly. When Creswell’s dog was gently carried into the inspector’s vehicle, it was evident that Sheba was arthritic and in considerable pain.

In addition to Sheba, two cats named Teddy and Venus were also found at the property. Both animals, along with Sheba, were taken into the care of the RSPCA’s Newbrook Animal Centre. The third cat was not present at the time of the inspection but has since been rehomed. All animals are currently under veterinary care and are gradually recovering from their ordeal.

Creswell appeared before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, where she pleaded guilty to two offences related to animal welfare. The court was informed of the high level of suffering endured by the animals, with magistrates citing the “dreadful condition” of Sheba as evidence of the neglect. The judge emphasized the severity of the case, highlighting the distress caused to the animals and the neglectful circumstances.

Inspector Louise Marston commented on the case, stating, “The general conditions of the house were clearly unsuitable for these pets, and they were taken into our care. The house was full of clutter, with animal faeces and urine covering the floors. A vet concluded that the cats were in good health, but Sheba was suffering from multiple health issues that required immediate treatment.” Sheba was promptly taken to an animal hospital for urgent medical attention. Since then, she has been placed in foster care, where she is making significant progress thanks to ongoing medication and care.

Regarding the cats, Teddy and Venus, they were bathed to remove the unpleasant smell from their fur and are now awaiting rehoming at the Burton and District branch of the RSPCA. Creswell’s neglect has resulted in a legal sentence that includes a two-year probation order, a 30-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and a financial penalty of £114 to cover costs and charges. Additionally, Creswell has been issued a 15-year ban on keeping animals, which will remain in effect until February 2036, preventing her from owning or caring for any animals during this period.
