DUNDEE MAN WITH HISTORY OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE GIVEN DEFERRED SENTENCE
A domestic abuser has three months to avoid a jail term by cooperating with social workers.Joseph Chalmers forced his former partner down a set of stairs and struck her on the face at an address in the Douglas area of Dundee.
He previously admitted seizing the woman’s body and pushing her, causing her severe injury as a result of the attack in 2024.
The 39-year-old – also known as Yousaf Chalmers – had been struggling in recent times with his mental health and substance misuse, according to solicitor Mike Short.
Dundee Sheriff Court heard how a social work report highlighted “grave reservations” about placing Chalmers, of Balunie Gardens, on a community payback order.
Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith placed Chalmers on a high-tariff structured deferred sentence which will allow him to work with the department for three months.
He told Chalmers: “I don’t want you leaving the court today, burying your head in the sand and think nothing will happen and you can just put it off and see what happens.”
