JOSEPH BATESON FROM TOOMEBRIDGE SENTENCED TO 11 YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST NEIGHBOR'S CHILD
In a case that has shocked the community of Toomebridge, Joseph Bateson, a man once described in court as an “ideal father and husband,” has been sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offences committed nearly two decades ago.Bateson, aged 39 at the time of sentencing, was found guilty of multiple serious crimes that took place when he was in his teens and early twenties. The victim, a young girl who was only six years old when the abuse began, endured a prolonged period of suffering at the hands of Bateson.
The court heard that Bateson, residing on Cairnmorn Road in Toomebridge, committed these offences against his neighbor and a friend of his younger brother. The crimes included a serious sexual offence, gross indecency, and indecent assault, for which he received consecutive sentences of six and a half years and additional sentences totaling four and a half years.
During the trial held in January, Bateson was convicted of a total of 18 sex offences related to the victim. Despite the gravity of the charges and the evidence presented, Bateson showed no visible emotion when he was sentenced at Belfast Crown Court on the Friday of the verdict.
The presiding judge described the abuse inflicted upon the victim as “relentless, vile, and depraved in nature,” emphasizing that it robbed the young girl of her childhood innocence. The court also noted the profound impact of the crimes on the victim’s life.
The victim, who has since become a father of four children, chose to waive his right to anonymity, stating that he hoped his decision would send a strong message to both perpetrators and victims of similar crimes. “This is a sad day for everybody really. I don’t feel any gloating or happiness. I feel sorry for him and his family,” he remarked.
He further expressed his hope that the sentencing would encourage other victims to come forward and begin the process of healing. The victim conveyed a desire to move past the traumatic events and focus on rebuilding his life, which he is now committed to doing for the sake of his children and his future.
