JONATHAN MATHIAS FROM NEWCASTLE-UNDER-LYME SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN PORTHCAWL

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Newcastle-under-Lyme and the surrounding areas, a former soldier named Jonathan Mathias was apprehended after engaging in illicit online activities involving child abuse material. The incident unfolded when Mathias, 41 years old and residing in Honeywood, Newcastle-under-Lyme, was caught in a sting operation orchestrated by undercover police officers.

Mathias was arrested at his parents' residence in Porthcawl on September 29 of the previous year. His wife was present at the time of his arrest. During a subsequent interview, when he believed he was out of earshot from his family, Mathias admitted to officers that he understood the reason for their visit. However, he attempted to downplay his actions, claiming he was merely 'messing about.'

The investigation was initiated after police created a profile on the Kik messaging app, where they engaged in conversations with Mathias. During these exchanges, Mathias requested to 'trade pictures' and sent images depicting a young girl being abused, along with photographs of children's underwear. He also claimed to have personally abused a young girl, according to reports from WalesOnline.

Following these incriminating exchanges, authorities obtained a warrant to search Mathias's devices. A Samsung phone was seized and later examined, revealing a disturbing collection of illicit material. The device contained 39 indecent images of children, seven extreme pornographic images, 66 videos depicting child abuse, and nine videos classified as extreme pornography. Prosecutor Clare Wilks highlighted that among the videos were depictions of very young children, including a baby, emphasizing the severity of the material found.

Further investigation uncovered a troubling conversation on Mathias's phone with an individual claiming to be a 14-year-old girl. In this chat, Mathias threatened to post explicit photos of her on Facebook unless she performed oral sex on her brother. Additionally, police found that Mathias had visited websites related to bestiality, adding to the gravity of his offenses.

Mathias pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including possession and distribution of indecent images of children, as well as possession of extreme pornography. Despite the severity of his crimes, the court noted that he was of previous good character. The case was heard at Newport Crown Court, where Judge Wayne Beard sentenced Mathias to two years and four months in prison. The judge also imposed a sexual harm prevention order and mandated that Mathias register as a sex offender for the next ten years, reflecting the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
