JOLYON SMITH FROM PEMBROKE DOCK SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL ATTACK ON GIRLFRIEND
A violent assault committed by Jolyon Smith, a resident of Pembroke Dock, has resulted in serious injuries to his girlfriend, leading to his imprisonment. The incident, which took place in August 2020, was brought to public attention after a concerned member of the public noticed bloodstains on the front door of a block of flats where Smith resided.According to court proceedings at Swansea Crown Court, the assault occurred on the evening when Smith's partner, Megan Jones, went to the Bush Tavern in Pembroke Dock expecting to meet him. However, Smith was not present at the pub that evening. Megan then took a taxi to Smith’s flat, where an argument erupted between the two. During this heated confrontation, Smith reportedly took the cigarette Megan was smoking and used it to burn her arm. The situation escalated further when he pushed her to the ground and proceeded to stamp on her face.
The court was told that the severity of the attack was so extreme that Megan believed her life was in danger, thinking Smith was attempting to kill her. The police were alerted to the incident after a visitor to the block of flats called emergency services, reporting that they had seen fresh blood dripping from a door. This call prompted an immediate response from law enforcement.
Medical examinations revealed that Megan Jones suffered a broken jaw, which necessitated reconstructive surgery involving the insertion of metal plates and screws. A statement presented in court indicated that she still experiences numbness in her lower jaw, a lasting consequence of the assault.
Jolyon Smith, aged 43 and residing on Meyrick Street in Pembroke Dock, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on the day he was scheduled to stand trial. His criminal record includes two previous convictions, one for driving under the influence of excess alcohol and another for failing to surrender to custody. Although police had been called to his address multiple times due to concerns related to domestic issues, Smith had not been convicted of domestic violence. Nonetheless, he was subject to a Domestic Violence Protection Order issued in 2020.
During sentencing, Recorder Benjamin Blakemore described Smith’s actions as “shameful and utterly despicable,” emphasizing that his assault left the victim with “sickening injuries.” The judge noted that Smith’s plea was entered on the day of trial, primarily out of self-interest rather than remorse, and that he had claimed self-defense in pre-sentence reports. The standard sentence for such an offence would have been approximately four years and three months. However, due to his guilty plea, the sentence was reduced, and Smith was sentenced to serve up to half of a reduced 46-month term in prison, with the remainder to be served on licence in the community.
