JOHN TREGALLES ARRESTED IN ROCHDALE AFTER FLEEING TEIGNMOUTH CHILD SEX OFFENSES
In a significant development in a long-standing child abuse case, John Tregalles, a convicted sex offender with a history of heinous crimes, was apprehended in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, late last night. The arrest came after police acted swiftly following a credible tip-off from a concerned member of the public, leading to his capture after nearly two weeks on the run.John Tregalles, aged 61, had been the subject of a nationwide manhunt since he disappeared on September 15 while attending his trial at Bolton Crown Court. His disappearance raised alarm among law enforcement officials and the public alike, given the severity of his convictions and the potential risk he posed to the community.
Tregalles, originally from Northumberland Place in Teignmouth, had been convicted of multiple serious offenses involving minors. He was sentenced in absentia to a 20-year prison term and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life. His convictions included three counts of raping a child under 16, along with additional charges of indecent assault, gross indecency, and aiding and abetting indecent assault against minors under the age of 13.
Specifically, the court found him guilty of three counts of indecent assault against boys under 13, two counts of gross indecency with a girl under 13, and two counts of assisting in the indecent assault of a girl under 13. The charges also encompassed four physical assaults on boys under 13 and one on a girl under 13. These offenses were committed over a period from 1986 to 1991, during which Tregalles resided in Rochdale, Lancashire.
The gravity of his crimes and his subsequent flight from justice prompted a widespread appeal for information, which ultimately led to his arrest in Rochdale. Authorities have emphasized the importance of community cooperation in ensuring that individuals like Tregalles are held accountable for their actions and are brought to justice, regardless of how long it takes or how far they try to run.
