JOHN TRAFFORD'S BRUTAL ANIMAL CRUELTY IN KINMEL BAY: FRENCH BULLDOG ATTACK SHOCKS RHYL COMMUNITY

John Trafford, a resident of Lon Olwen in Kinmel Bay, Rhyl, has been convicted of a heinous act of animal cruelty that has shocked the local community and added to his extensive criminal record. Born on July 12, 1980, Trafford’s latest offense involved a disturbing assault on his pet French bulldog, Ronnie, which took place on the 19th of May, 2020.

According to court reports, Trafford’s violent behavior was both deliberate and gratuitous. Witnesses and court officials described how Trafford, in a moment of panic when his dog bolted, responded with excessive force. He lifted Ronnie above his head by the lead, swung him violently through the air, and then slammed him onto the ground with considerable force. Following this, Trafford proceeded to kick and punch the defenseless animal, inflicting unnecessary pain and distress.

District Judge Gwyn Jones condemned Trafford’s actions, emphasizing that the violence was not only deliberate but also excessively cruel. The judge stated, “No doubt the dog was terrified and was in significant pain as a result of your behaviour.” The court heard that Trafford’s reaction was “totally over the top,” considering the circumstances, and that the extent of the violence justified a custodial sentence.

Trafford’s criminal history is extensive, including previous convictions for assault, harassment, and burglary. His latest conviction for animal cruelty has now been added to this list, highlighting a pattern of violent and unlawful behavior. The court was informed that Ronnie, the victim dog, was not injured during the attack and has since been placed with another local family, ensuring his safety.

During the sentencing hearing, Trafford’s solicitor acknowledged his client’s failure to justify or excuse his actions and expressed that Trafford was “appalled” by his own conduct. The original sentence handed down was a 20-week jail term along with a 15-year ban on keeping dogs. However, Trafford appealed this decision, leading to a reduction in his prison sentence to 12 weeks. Additionally, his ban on owning dogs has been extended to ten years, which will expire in October 2030.

This case has garnered significant attention in the Kinmel Bay and Rhyl areas, raising concerns about animal welfare and the importance of strict enforcement of animal protection laws. The community continues to react with shock and disappointment over the cruelty inflicted upon Ronnie, and local authorities have reiterated their commitment to prosecuting such offenses to the fullest extent of the law.
