JOHN SHIEL FROM BISHOP AUCKLAND SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR REPREHENSIBLE SEXUAL ABUSE
In a case that has shocked the community of Bishop Auckland, John Andrew Shiel, aged 44, was handed a severe prison sentence of 13 years after being found guilty of multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of a child.The conviction followed a detailed seven-day trial held at Durham Crown Court in January, where the jury unanimously agreed on his guilt.
Shiel, who resides on Albert Hill in Bishop Auckland, faced six charges in total.
He denied one count of indecent assault and five counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
Despite his denials, the court's verdict was clear, and he was convicted on all counts.
The sentencing was temporarily postponed to allow the court to hear an impact statement from the victim, whose identity remains protected.
After the statement was read aloud, Judge Christopher Prince addressed Shiel directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.
The judge remarked, “Those, such as you, who commit offences like this, must understand if it has such an effect, it has to be replicated in sentence.” The court was informed that the victim only disclosed the abuse several years after the incidents occurred, revealing the trauma while drinking with friends at a social gathering.
This delay in disclosure underscores the profound and lasting impact of the abuse.
During the proceedings, David Lamb, representing Shiel, highlighted that his client has no prior criminal record and continues to deny any involvement in the offences.
It was also revealed that before his arrest, Shiel was employed in the logistics sector, specifically providing customs support for the Department for Work and Pensions.
Judge Prince did not hold back in his assessment of Shiel’s character, describing him as an “intelligent, but arrogant man” who subjected the victim to a “revolting experience.” The court also ordered that Shiel be disqualified from working with children for life and mandated that he sign the Sex Offenders’ Register permanently, reflecting the seriousness of his crimes and the need for ongoing monitoring.
