DURHAM MAN WALKS FREE AFTER CHILD ONLINE SAFETY TEAM STING
A Durham man exposed by the Child Online Safety Team (COST) — a paedophile-hunting group from the North East — has walked free after a two-day trial despite admitting to sending sexual messages to what he believed was a 14-year-old girl.John Sadler, who had used a fake name, false age, and stolen photos, was confronted by COST after being caught in an online sting.
During court proceedings, Sadler admitted in front of his wife and the jury that he sent sexual messages to the profile, which was in fact run by a COST decoy.
He also confessed to messaging hundreds of women behind his wife’s back between 2021 and 2023, portraying himself as younger and single throughout his deceit.
Despite these admissions, Sadler’s defence argued that he did not believe the person he was speaking to was genuinely a child.
After deliberation, the jury returned a not guilty verdict on that basis — a decision that has left many observers and campaigners shocked.
COST stated they have no issue releasing the full chat log to the public, noting that Sadler does not dispute the content of the messages.
The verdict has reignited debate around online stings, intent, and accountability in grooming investigations — with growing frustration among child-protection advocates who feel the justice system often fails to match public expectation.
