JOHN RIDLEY AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENCES IN DURHAM
A 71-year-old sex offender named John Ridley from Durham has been sentenced to prison after committing severe sexual offenses against both a young girl and a woman in her 30s on the same day.The court has recognized that Ridley poses a significant and ongoing risk to the public due to his criminal history and apparent lack of boundaries in sexual behavior.
The judge who delivered the sentence expressed strong criticism of Ridley's attitude, stating that he appears to have no real sexual boundaries and seemingly believes he can act without facing any repercussions.
Ridley, residing on South View Terrace in Chilton Moor near Houghton-le-Spring, previously admitted to engaging in sexual assaults against both a female adult and a minor earlier this year.
Despite the admission, he did not show up for his originally scheduled sentencing hearing at Durham Crown Court last month.
He later surrendered himself voluntarily, explaining that his absence was due to a car breakdown.
The court proceedings were then postponed until May 18, at which point the judge learned that Ridley had a long history of sexual offending, including a 15-year imprisonment at Newcastle Crown Court in 2008 for rape and indecent assault on children.
The judge and prosecution highlighted that although Ridley is now on the sex offenders register for life, he failed to inform his neighbors or those he lives with of his past convictions.
During the latest incidents, Ridley was accused of indecently assaulting a girl while she was lying in her bed and told her to keep quiet.
He reportedly committed a similar offense against a woman inside her own home, despite her repeated pleas for him to stop.
Law enforcement was called the following day, leading to his arrest.
Ridley admitted to assaulting the woman but initially denied the assault involving the girl.
Prosecutor Ian West pointed out disturbing elements in Ridley’s behavior, noting that Ridley had told acquaintances he was attracted to the woman involved and wanted to remove her partner from the scene.
The woman, who gave a victim statement, said she was unaware of Ridley's past convictions.
She also revealed she has been diagnosed with anxiety and depression since the attack, experiencing flashbacks and nightmares.
She admitted to self-harming and stated that she now feels uncomfortable around men, including long-standing acquaintances.
In mitigation, Katie Spence argued that Ridley should not be further punished for his previous offenses or held responsible for his long prison sentence.
She described his post-release life as lonely, having moved to a new area with limited social connections, which were all innocent.
Spence stated that Ridley expressed remorse, acknowledging his actions and expressing a desire to prevent further offenses by simply stopping.
She also revealed that Ridley hopes to receive a suspended prison sentence, despite the aggravating factors of his past.
However, Presiding Judge James Adkin dismissed this possibility, deeming it to be excessively lenient given the circumstances.
During the sentencing, Judge Adkin addressed Ridley's sense of entitlement and lack of boundaries, emphasizing that his behavior demonstrated a belief that he could do as he pleased without consequence.
The judge acknowledged the probation report's assertion that Ridley poses a serious risk of harm to the public, which he agreed with.
Consequently, Ridley was sentenced to a 36-month extended detention order, which requires him to serve at least two-thirds of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
Following this period, he will remain under supervision for an additional two years.
The court also imposed lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Orders, mandated registration as a sex offender, and issued restraining orders protecting his latest victims.
