JOHN REGAN CONVICTED OF SEXUAL OFFENCES IN BISHOP AUCKLAND

In December 2016, a man named John Regan, residing in Bishop Auckland, was found guilty of serious sexual offences involving two young girls. The crimes, which took place during the 1970s, included multiple counts of rape, indecent assault, and indecency with a child, all committed against girls aged between 10 and 14 years old. The case was heard at Durham Crown Court, where the jury reached a unanimous verdict after more than three hours of deliberation on all 11 charges brought against Regan.

Regan, now aged 66, faced a series of allegations that he had engaged in sexual misconduct while working as a farm labourer in the early to mid-1970s. He vehemently denied four counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault, and three counts of indecency with a child. Despite his denials, the evidence presented during the trial was compelling enough for the jury to convict him on all counts on the sixth day of proceedings.

Following the verdict, Judge Simon Hickey addressed Regan directly, informing him that he would be remanded into custody pending sentencing scheduled for early January. The judge emphasized the gravity of the convictions, stating, “You have been found guilty by unanimous verdicts. The two complainants, who have borne this abuse for so long, gave clear evidence and the jury have found you guilty on it. You’re now remanded in custody, but it will be a substantial sentence.”

Judge Hickey also ordered a background report from the Probation Service to evaluate Regan’s potential risk to others, despite the offences occurring many years ago. He expressed the need to assess whether Regan poses a danger to the community, given his previous good character. The judge requested written submissions from both the prosecution and defence regarding where the case fits within sentencing guidelines, acknowledging the complexity of the decision ahead.

Throughout the trial, members of Regan’s family and supporters filled the public gallery, displaying emotional reactions to the verdict. The court heard eleven character references, many from family members, friends, and acquaintances who described Regan as a trusted and respected individual. Some testimonials came from parents of children who had attended a gym club that Regan managed for approximately 18 years, highlighting the contrast between his public persona and the allegations.

As a result of his conviction, Regan will be required to register as a sex offender. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, January 4, where the court will determine the length and nature of his punishment based on the evidence and reports presented.
