JOHN MALYON SENTENCED IN PLUMSTEAD FOR RAPE AND ABUSE OF GIRLS
In a case that has spanned over two decades, John Malyon, aged 42, was sentenced to a total of six years in prison for the heinous crimes of child abuse and rape. The offences, which involved three young girls, came to light only recently after the victims, now adults, decided to come forward and report the abuse to the police.Judge Ian Davies presided over the case and delivered a stern sentence, emphasizing the betrayal of trust by Malyon, who was once considered a family friend. The judge stated, “The children were scared by what you did to them. They never consented to any sexual behaviour you indulged in. You told them it was their secret.”
At the time of sentencing, Malyon was residing in Bristow Road, Bexleyheath, and was on bail. Throughout the proceedings, he maintained his innocence, denying all charges brought against him. The court was informed that the abuse began in 1976, when Malyon, who was a family acquaintance, targeted a young girl at her home in Plumstead.
The abuse escalated over the years, with Malyon subjecting the girl to increasingly serious acts. The victim, who was only eight years old at the time, eventually threatened to tell her mother about the assaults. Malyon responded with intimidation, telling her, “Who do you think she will believe, me or you?” and warning her that she would be placed in a children’s home if she disclosed the abuse. Similar allegations were also made by two other women from Greenwich, who recounted being abused by Malyon during their childhood.
Judge Davies acknowledged the lengthy period since the offences occurred, noting that approximately 20 years had passed without any recurrence of such behaviour. However, he emphasized the seriousness of the case, highlighting the emotional trauma inflicted on the victims. The judge remarked, “This remains a serious case and you must be sentenced on the basis you have caused them to appear as witnesses, bringing back all the memories of events they no doubt wished to forget.”
Ultimately, Malyon was sentenced to six years for the charge of rape and an additional two years for eight counts of indecent assault. These sentences are to run concurrently, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victims.
