TEACHER SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL COMMUNICATION BAN FROM TEACHING
A teacher named John Lane, who was employed by Education Plus North East, has been banned from the teaching profession after sending sexually inappropriate messages to someone he believed was a 15-year-old girl.
Lane was approached at his residence in June 2020 by a group known as the Child Online Safety Team, and this incident was shared on Facebook.
Following this, Durham Police were alerted, and Lane was subsequently arrested.
He pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor and received a suspended prison sentence.
The sentencing included a six-month suspended prison term, requiring him to register as a sex offender for seven years and to be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same duration.
A misconduct panel concluded that Lane posed a risk to children of school age, despite the incident being isolated and occurring on social media.
The panel emphasized that Lane should have been aware of the protocols for online safety and noted the lack of remorse or reassurance from him to prevent future offenses.
As a result, the panel decided that Lane is prohibited from teaching in any educational or youth institutions in England indefinitely, with the right to appeal within 28 days.
The incident underscores the risks associated with online behavior, especially for those in positions of trust.
