JOHN KING FROM EAST BOLDON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD ABUSE IMAGES SCANDAL
In a case that has shocked the community of East Boldon, 19-year-old John King faced serious allegations related to the possession and creation of illegal images depicting child abuse. The incident came to light in December 2013 when police officers responded to a tip-off and arrived at King's residence, where they discovered a disturbing collection of nearly 3,000 illicit images and videos.John King, who resides in Glencourse, East Boldon, openly admitted to detectives that he had been viewing such disturbing material since he was just 12 years old. During police interviews, he did not deny the allegations but instead acknowledged the extent of his obsession. Prosecutor Paul Rowland told Newcastle Crown Court that King had described child pornography as an obsession during his interview, and he confirmed that he had last viewed such material on his computer on the day of his arrest.
The court was informed that King pleaded guilty to charges of making and possessing a total of 2,879 illegal images of children. These images and video clips were categorized across various severity levels, from the most serious to the least serious, highlighting the disturbing nature of the content involved.
Judge Simon Hickey, presiding over the case, sentenced King to a community order lasting three years. The sentence includes supervision, mandatory participation in a sex offender treatment program, and a sex offenders’ prevention order that will remain in effect for ten years. Additionally, King is required to register as a sex offender for a period of five years.
In his remarks, Judge Hickey emphasized the fact that King had been honest about his actions from the outset and acknowledged the duration of his offending. He expressed particular concern that King had started viewing such material as a child himself and continued into adulthood, describing this as “sad in the extreme.” The judge noted that while imprisonment might have been justified, it would not address the underlying issues, and no external help had been sought or provided to stop his behavior.
Defence lawyer Vic Laffey highlighted that King had no prior criminal record and was considered to have an “exemplary” character. Laffey stated that King’s reaction upon arrest was one of relief, as he anticipated the consequences. He expressed confidence that this case would be a turning point for King, asserting that he would likely never appear before a court again. Laffey also acknowledged that King was aware of the shame and impact his actions had brought upon his family, particularly his parents, and confirmed that King had cooperated fully with authorities since his arrest and intended to continue doing so.
