Prison for sex abuse trial man
A MIDDLE-aged man who sexually abused a four-year-old girl has been jailed for four months.
Burnley Crown Court heard how John Gregory, 51, of Billington Avenue, Rawtenstall, touched the child indecently.
A judge told him the youngster was very young and no course other than custody could be justified.
Judge David Pirie said Gregory, who had been cleared of other sex allegations involving a second girl, was a man of “entirely good character” with no previous convictions.
The judge said he had put the claims made by the other child completely to one side.
He added he recognised there had been tragedy in Gregory’s life, that had clearly affected him and his health and he was receiving medication.
Gregory had been convicted of one count of indecent assault by a jury after a trial lasting several days.
He will be on the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years.
Hugh McKee, defending, said Gregory was suffering from anxiety and depression and was on tranquillisers.
He had arrived at court full of trepidation, knowing he could quite easily be sent to custody. The offence took place a number of years ago and there was absolutely no risk of anything it re-occurring. He would never be in a position for it to happen again.
Mr McKee said he did not concede that custody was inevitable for the offence. A probation order would serve to protect the public in the long term.
He went on: “The choices are stark. It will either be a custodial sentence or a probation order. I urge the court to give him the benefit of the doubt.”
