JOHN FOX FROM BARSHAM GETS HIS SENTENCE CUT IN CHILD PORN CASE NEAR FAKENHAM

In a significant legal development, John Fox, a 46-year-old man from Barsham, faced a substantial reduction in his prison sentence after being convicted of possessing a vast collection of child abuse images. Fox, who had no fixed address at the time but was residing with his elderly mother near Fakenham, was found to have accumulated an enormous cache of illegal material that police described as nearly reaching the ceiling of his room.

His arrest in 2007 was part of a broader investigation into the online sale of child pornography, specifically targeting activities on eBay. During the raid, authorities uncovered a trove of videos, DVDs, and magazines, many containing some of the most disturbing images of child abuse imaginable. The material included scenes of sexual acts involving children and adults, acts of bestiality, and sadistic abuse, highlighting the severity of the content Fox had collected.

At the time of the search, Fox was cooperative and candid with the police officers. He admitted that he had been collecting such material since the mid-1980s, sometimes paying as much as £200 for a single magazine. His honesty during questioning was noted by prosecutors, and he acknowledged that he had not distributed the images but had only downloaded or printed them from the internet.

Following his arrest, Fox pleaded guilty to multiple counts of making indecent images of children and possessing such images. In February, he was initially sentenced to three years in prison. However, the case was brought before the Court of Appeal in London, where three senior judges reviewed the sentence.

Justice Christopher Clarke, delivering the judgment alongside Lord Justice Maurice Kay and Mr Justice Cranston, described the quantity of material found as “gigantic” and emphasized that much of it was of “extreme seriousness.” Despite this, the judges noted that there was no evidence of distribution, and Fox’s actions were limited to downloading and printing images, not sharing them.

Justice Clarke pointed out that Fox had made immediate admissions, pleaded guilty, and was aware that his actions were wrong. Based on these considerations, the court concluded that the original three-year sentence was “manifestly excessive” and decided to reduce it to two years. This decision reflects the court’s recognition of the seriousness of the offense while also considering Fox’s cooperation and guilty plea.
