JOHN FAIRBURN FROM DEIGHTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN YORK
In a case that has shocked the community of Deighton and the surrounding areas, John Fairburn, a 74-year-old man from Deighton south of York, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term following his conviction for multiple counts of child sexual abuse. The proceedings at York Crown Court revealed a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that spanned several years and involved multiple young victims.According to the prosecution, Nick Adlington, Fairburn began abusing a young girl when she was just nine years old. The abuse persisted over a period of years, with Fairburn exploiting her innocence and naivety during her childhood. The court heard that only after the victim saw reports of Fairburn’s earlier crimes did she feel able to come forward and report her experiences to the police. In her personal statement, she expressed deep regret for not speaking out sooner, stating, “I wish I had spoken up when I was younger. It may have saved others.” She also emphasized that no apology could ever compensate for the depraved actions committed against her.
She described the lasting impact of the abuse, recounting how the shame and embarrassment she endured continue to overwhelm her at times. “He took advantage of my innocence and naivety for a long period of my childhood. I felt so ashamed when the significance of what he had subjected me to,” she said. Despite seeking help early on, including speaking with her GP and receiving counseling, she found it so difficult to discuss her trauma that she eventually discontinued her therapy.
Fairburn’s criminal record also includes the sexual assault of two other young girls, starting when they were only seven years old. These assaults occurred over a span of four years, and in November 2020, Fairburn was sentenced to five and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to ten charges of sexual assault and one charge of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. It was only after the victim of the earlier abuse saw media reports that she felt able to report her own experiences, leading to the charges.
During the recent sentencing, Judge Sean Morris described Fairburn’s actions as “wicked offending” and emphasized the need for a severe punishment. The judge ordered that Fairburn serve an additional eight years in prison, to be served consecutively after his previous sentence. This means that Fairburn’s total incarceration now amounts to thirteen and a half years. Furthermore, upon release, he will be subject to an extra year on parole.
In addition to his prison sentence, Fairburn has been placed under a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order that prohibits him from contacting any of the three victims. He will also remain on the sex offender register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions. The court’s decision underscores the gravity of his crimes and the lasting harm inflicted upon his victims, who endured abuse over several years, starting when they were as young as seven.
