A 52-year-old man named John David Sarwanskyj has been convicted of murdering his 73-year-old father, Ivan Sarwanskyj, in a brutal assault.
Authorities attended a residence on Braemar Avenue in Southport, Merseyside, in December last year, where they found Ivan’s lifeless body.
Following a trial at Liverpool Crown Court, Sarwanskyj was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 14 years behind bars.
The court was told that the deterioration of their relationship was worsened by the death of their pet dog, which possibly played a role in triggering the violent incident.
The authorities described the killing as a deeply distressing case of domestic violence against a vulnerable elderly man inside his home.
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Nuttall remarked that Ivan was a fragile, elderly individual who fell victim to his son during a sustained and horrific attack.
The case was noted as elder abuse, drawing attention to the serious risks associated with domestic violence against older adults.
Sarwanskyj will face parole eligibility after serving his minimum term of 14 years.
