JOHN CREE FROM ARDROSSAN AND IRVINE SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING CHILDREN NEAR MILLPORT HARBOUR

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Ardrossan and Irvine, John Cree, a 64-year-old man, was recently sentenced after being found guilty of serious sexual offences involving minors. The incidents took place over a period spanning from June 28, 2016, to August 20, 2016, near Millport Harbour, a popular fishing destination. Cree, who resides on Dalrymple Place in Irvine, was convicted of showing pornographic material to a 10-year-old girl while they were both aboard a fishing boat. This disturbing act was part of a series of inappropriate behaviors that have now led to his placement on the sex offenders register.

During the court proceedings at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, Cree admitted to making the young girl view explicit images, an act that has understandably caused concern among local residents and authorities alike. The court also heard that Cree, who has a beard and wears glasses, previously lived in Cumbrae and Pennyburn, and that he had made a sexual comment to the same girl. Additionally, on September 22 of the previous year, Cree was observed making a sexual remark to another young girl, aged nine, near the Kelburn Bar in Millport. These incidents collectively paint a troubling picture of Cree’s conduct involving minors in the area.

When Cree appeared before the court for sentencing on February 15, the defense acknowledged that his explanation for the offences was not convincing. The presiding sheriff, Hanlon, emphasized the gravity of Cree’s actions, describing them as 'concerning' and serious. Despite the severity, Sheriff Hanlon decided against imposing a custodial sentence, citing the importance of supervision and rehabilitation. The sheriff noted that Cree’s case requires significant work and monitoring before he can be considered to have addressed his behavior.

As part of his sentence, Cree was ordered to complete a Community Payback Order, which includes 125 hours of unpaid work to be carried out within six months. Furthermore, he is mandated to participate in the 'Moving Forward Making Changes' program and will be under supervision for a period of three years. To ensure ongoing monitoring and public safety, Cree has also been placed on the sex offenders register for three years, marking a serious step in managing his risk to the community and preventing further harm.
