MAN JAILED FOR 13 YEARS AFTER RAPING WOMAN
John Callaway, of Shakespeare Close in Everton, was convicted of rape following a court trial. The 43-year-old was found guilty of raping a 19-year-old woman in the back of his van after offering her a lift home during a night out in March 2023.
CCTV footage showed him approaching her as she was separated from her friends and remaining with her on the street corner for about 15 minutes, before driving her to a secluded location off West Derby Road where he raped her as she was barely conscious.
The victim described feeling as if her life had ended and suffering from nightmares and panic attacks ever since.
Callaway was sentenced to 13 years in prison with an extended three-year licence period and was handed a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim.
The judge described him as a 'very dangerous man, particularly to young, lone women.' Callaway has no previous convictions.
He maintains his innocence, though authorities place him as actively seeking a victim that night, with evidence of planning involved.
He has engaged with mental health services in prison with the aim of rehabilitation.
