John Bootland, 57, admitted murder at Leeds Crown Court after the death of Colleen Westerman, 62.
The victim was found fatally injured at a house in Melville Gardens, Woodhouse, Leeds, following a disturbance.
Bootland, who has no fixed address, has been remanded in custody and is set to be sentenced on 1 April.
