JOHN BELL INVERCLYDE CHILD SEX IMAGE PERVERT SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS IN PRISON
In September 2010, a disturbing case emerged involving John Bell, a resident of Inverclyde, who was found to possess an alarming collection of child sexual abuse images on his home computers. The authorities uncovered a staggering total of 120,000 illicit images, which included explicit photographs of local boys from Inverclyde, as well as thousands of other images depicting minors subjected to horrific sexual abuse.
Among the disturbing content, investigators identified 45 indecent images specifically involving children from the Inverclyde area.
The court proceedings revealed that Bell, aged 52, had made multiple attempts to take his own life while in custody following a police raid on his former residence located on Pennyfern Road in Greenock.
This raid was part of a broader investigation into his activities involving illegal material.
During the sentencing hearing, Sheriff John Herald addressed the court, emphasizing the severity of the offense.
He stated, "I take into account the vast majority of these images were at the lowest end of the scale, but at the highest end there were hundreds.
I have also looked at the specialist reports done on you and take into account your personal circumstances, but I have no alternative but to impose a custodial sentence." The sheriff made it clear that incarceration was inevitable given the nature of the crimes.
Bell’s defense solicitor, Gerry Keenan, highlighted that his client’s early guilty plea had prevented the need for local boys to testify in court.
Keenan acknowledged the vile nature of the images but suggested they were not the worst the court had encountered.
He also pointed out that Bell, a first-time offender, had struggled with prison life and had attempted suicide more than once.
Additionally, Keenan noted Bell’s concern for his mother, who was in the early stages of dementia, and his role as her caregiver.
The court was informed that police had recovered evidence of internet conversations between Bell and a Belgian paedophile.
These exchanges were found on three of Bell’s computers, alongside 6,325 child pornography images.
Further investigations revealed that Bell had used specialized software to wipe traces of an additional 113,000 images, attempting to conceal his activities.
Investigators also uncovered that Bell had taken groups of local children on trips to various locations, including Loch Thom, Loch Lomond, and Beith Dam.
During these outings, he took photographs of naked boys swimming, storing these images on a laptop.
The severity of the images, which depicted boys aged between five and 13, was so grave that Sheriff John Herald ordered the courtroom to be closed during a private viewing by experts.
Bell pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including possession of indecent photographs or pseudo-photos of children between January 1, 2005, and November 20 of the previous year, at his Pennyfern Road address.
He also admitted to creating, taking, or permitting the taking of indecent images of children at various locations, such as Loch Thom, Old Largs Road at Whinhill Golf Course, Beith Dam, Loch Lomond, Blackpool, and the Time Capsule in Coatbridge, during the period from January 1, 2005, to September 12, 2008.
Furthermore, Bell accepted charges related to using computer software like evidence eliminator and window washer to delete material and hinder justice.
Ultimately, the court sentenced John Bell to two years in prison, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the impact on the victims and community of Inverclyde.
