JOHN BARKER FROM DURHAM SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN TEESSIDE
A parent in Durham faced a harrowing ordeal after discovering that his young daughter had been targeted by a man engaging in online sexual communication.The distressing incident unfolded earlier this year when the father uncovered highly explicit messages sent to his primary-school aged child from John Barker, a 33-year-old man who had no prior relationship with the girl.
Upon discovering the messages, the parent immediately contacted local authorities to report the incident.
Law enforcement swiftly responded, arresting Barker and releasing him on bail while investigations continued.
However, during the course of the inquiry, Barker resumed his online activities.
He attempted to contact another profile, claiming to be a child, with the apparent intent of persuading this individual to participate in sexual acts via the internet.
Unbeknownst to Barker, the profile he was communicating with was part of a child protection operation.
It was set up by a child safeguarding group to catch predators attempting to exploit minors online.
Barker, who at the time was residing at North Lodge Terrace in Darlington but is now without a fixed address, pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
These included engaging in sexual communication with a child, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and producing indecent images of a child.
His court appearance took place on Friday at Teesside Crown Court.
Judge Jonathan Carroll addressed Barker directly, emphasizing the gravity of the case.
The judge stated, "A dad found what is every parent's nightmare - that his young daughter had engaged in sexual communication with an unknown male.
It’s the adult world's responsibility to protect and care for our children.
The internet and social media are increasingly becoming the hunting grounds for individuals like you, who see children as easy targets for exploitation." Judge Carroll further highlighted the disturbing nature of Barker’s actions, noting, "It was abundantly clear that she was young.
It is clear that you were seeking to go down exactly the same path with the second user as you did with the child victim." As a result of his crimes, Barker was sentenced to 53 months in prison.
He will serve half of this sentence before being eligible for release on licence.
Additionally, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his activities and contact with minors.
He will also be required to sign the sex offenders' register for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
