MAN WHO RAPED AND ABUSED GIRL AROUND 30 YEARS AGO JAILED
2019.A man who committed multiple sexual offences against a teenage girl nearly 30 years ago has received a 14-year prison sentence.
John Sydney Adam, 69, of Fidler Street, Toll Bar, was convicted in Liverpool Crown Court this morning (Friday) after a trial.
The court found him guilty of three counts of rape and three counts of indecent assault related to a single victim, as well as an additional indecent assault on a girl under ten.
The offences took place in Newton-le-Willows, with one incident occurring at Grange Park.
All of these offences date back approximately three decades.
The jury reached a unanimous verdict after deliberating for roughly three hours.
Prosecutor Nicola Daley explained that the older victim had concealed her experiences for around 30 years and suffers from long-standing mental health conditions.
Judge Recorder Jeremy Lasker remarked on the serious nature of the crimes, noting that Adam’s abuse of a teenage girl for his own sexual gratification caused lasting harm.
He stated that these were “extremely serious offences” and that Adam’s decision to go to trial meant he did not benefit from an early guilty plea.
Recognised as “an offender of particular concern,” Adam’s sentence includes an extra year of extended license at the end of his custodial period.
In court, Adam, dressed in a green top, remained silent as he received his sentence.
He was given seven concurrent sentences: 14 years each for the two counts of rape, 10 years for the third, five years each for two indecent assaults, two years for another indecent assault, and nine months for the attack on the younger victim.
Adam’s lawyer, Keith Sutton, stated that his client has not been in trouble since these offences and has not reoffended despite his advancing age.
Sutton also detailed Adam’s health issues, which include COPD, emphysema, angina, a history of heart attacks, osteoporosis, and ongoing medications.
