MAN SENTENCED FOR CONTROLLING AND RAPING FORMER PARTNER
A 42-year-old man has received a prison sentence of seven years and nine months after being convicted of coercive and controlling behavior as well as two counts of rape.Jody Alan Cook, formerly residing in Daventry, was involved in a 21-year relationship during which he exhibited violent, manipulative, and controlling conduct.
Throughout their relationship, Cook repeatedly accused his partner of infidelity and exerted control by isolating her from her family and friends, disapproving of her maintaining contact with others.
She was deprived of a contract phone, relying instead on a pay-as-you-go device, and all her passwords were shared with Cook, allowing him to monitor her activities regularly.
Despite her attempts to leave multiple times, Cook prevented her from doing so, going to lengths such as blocking her car with his truck and, on one occasion, removing her car’s battery to prevent her from driving away.
During their relationship, Cook also committed two rapes against her.
In 2018, showing remarkable courage, the woman finally left him and reached out to Northamptonshire Police for assistance.
Following her disclosure, authorities launched an investigation, leading to Cook’s arrest and subsequent charges.
On March 18, 2022, after a five-day trial at Northampton Crown Court, he was convicted of two counts of rape and one of coercive and controlling behavior.
The sentencing was handed down at Leicester Crown Court on May 4, resulting in a prison term of seven years and nine months.
Detective Sergeant Dan Spires, the lead investigator, expressed gratitude to the survivor, emphasizing her patience and resilience that helped secure justice.
He highlighted the courage required to speak out after a long history of abuse and wished the survivor a hopeful future.
DS Spires also reaffirmed Northamptonshire Police’s commitment to taking domestic abuse reports seriously, stressing their dedication to both pursuing offenders and supporting victims.
