JOAQUIN GOMEZ HERNANDEZ SENTENCED FOR MURDER OF TRANSGENDER WIFE IN LONDON

Joaquin Gomez Hernandez, a 24-year-old man, was found guilty and subsequently sentenced for the brutal murder of his transgender wife, Vanessa Santillan, in London. The tragic incident unfolded after Gomez Hernandez attacked Vanessa by strangulation and physical assault, leading to her death in their shared residence. The case drew significant attention during the trial held at the Old Bailey, where details of the crime and the offender’s behavior were thoroughly examined.

It was revealed that Gomez Hernandez had a motive rooted in jealousy and resentment, particularly related to their recent move from Mexico to London just two months prior. The court heard that he resented his financial dependence on Vanessa, who was working as an escort. The prosecution presented evidence that Gomez Hernandez’s anger was exacerbated by an incident in March, when he discovered Vanessa with a client at her London flat. Witnesses testified that he became visibly jealous and furious after seeing her entertain another client following an outing with friends. This emotional turmoil culminated in a violent attack, during which Gomez Hernandez inflicted severe injuries to her head and neck, ultimately causing her death.

During the trial, it was also disclosed that Gomez Hernandez attempted to manipulate the situation by trying to frame one of Vanessa’s clients. He pretended to discover her body and suggested that her death might have been caused by someone else, an act that demonstrated his callousness and attempt to evade responsibility. The court heard that after the murder, Gomez Hernandez’s conduct was particularly disturbing; he took her belongings, including money and telephones, and engaged in visits to prostitutes, showing a blatant disregard for her life and their relationship.

Judge Richard Marks QC sentenced Gomez Hernandez to a minimum term of 14 and a half years in prison. In his remarks, the judge highlighted the brutality of the attack, noting that Vanessa had sustained extensive head injuries and manual strangulation. The judge described the scene, stating, “Vanessa had extensive head injuries and suffered manual strangulation. You left her on the floor, naked from the waist down. You then engaged in a pretence and lied to the police.”

Vanessa’s family delivered an impact statement expressing their profound grief and emphasizing the injustice of her death. They mourned her loss and highlighted the tragic circumstances that led to her untimely demise. Vanessa, who had recently relocated to London from Mexico, was working as an escort at the time of her death. Her murder not only underscored the dangers faced by transgender individuals but also brought to light broader issues surrounding domestic violence and violence against marginalized communities. The case served as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by transgender women and the importance of addressing such violence within society.
