JESSICA SMITH SENTENCED IN LONDON FOR NEGLECTING PET CAT STORMY
Jessica Smith, born on 30 March 1995 and residing at Sunny Bank, South Norwood, London SE25, was convicted in 2025 for the severe neglect of her pet cat, Stormy. The court heard that Smith starved her black and white cat and left him to suffer from urine scalds.Magistrates were informed that Smith delayed taking Stormy to a PDSA Animal Hospital until 10 April 2024, despite noticing his poor health for two to three weeks prior. The vet determined that Stormy was so unwell that euthanasia was the kindest option.
RSPCA inspector Harriet Daliday attended the hospital and provided a statement to the court, saying: "Stormy was extremely underweight with no obvious fat. All his ribs, hips, and spine could be easily felt, and his rear paws had raw open lesions on the pads of the feet."
Smith told the court that the cat had been off his food for two weeks and was experiencing toileting issues. By the time Stormy arrived at the hospital, he was barely able to hold his head up. His body condition score was 1 out of 9, indicating emaciation, and he had urine scalds on his back legs.
The defendant explained to a vet at the hospital that she was advised to syringe-feed the cat but claimed she lacked the financial means to do so. She only contacted the PDSA in the final days of Stormy's life.
A veterinarian at the hospital concluded that Stormy had endured prolonged suffering, at least three months before his death. The vet stated: "The defendant failed to take reasonable steps to seek veterinary care for her cat and protect him from pain, suffering, and disease."
During the court proceedings, it was mentioned that Smith was remorseful and had been unable to financially support her three children and a sick cat while pregnant with a fourth.
After sentencing, inspector Daliday commented: "We’d urge pet owners to act swiftly and seek prompt veterinary advice if their pet is showing any signs of ill health. For those who find themselves struggling, many reputable animal welfare charities can offer help and advice. We encourage anyone in a difficult situation to seek support."
The court sentenced Smith to a 12-week jail term, suspended for one year, with an additional £300 in court costs. She was also banned from keeping animals for 15 years.
