JEREMIAH O’CALLAGHAN'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN CORK: CHILD RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULTS REVEALED
In March 2009, Jeremiah O’Callaghan, aged 54, a resident of the Clontarf estate in Blackrock, Cork, was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court after he pleaded guilty to serious charges involving child sexual abuse. The court heard that O’Callaghan admitted to one count of rape and nine counts of sexual assault, all committed over a span of more than a decade, from 1990 to 2002.Details of the case revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that began when one of his victims was just 13 years old. The young girl recounted in her victim impact statement that she was awakened to find O’Callaghan touching her inappropriately. Over the following year, similar incidents occurred approximately eight or nine times, causing her significant trauma. The abuse was interrupted when O’Callaghan left Ireland to serve with the Irish Army in Lebanon, but the scars of his actions remained.
Further revelations showed that O’Callaghan later entered into a relationship with the mother of two other victims, moving into their family home. One of the girls, identified as E, was only 11 years old when she first woke to find him touching her during the night. This disturbing pattern continued, with incidents happening again two months later and almost nightly thereafter. The court heard that during a period when O’Callaghan had moved out of the mother’s house but still maintained contact with the girls, he drove E home and insisted on stopping at his house. Inside, he locked the door and proceeded to rape her, despite her efforts to resist.
The abuse extended to another girl, J, beginning in January 1998 when she was just 11 years old. The assaults continued until January 2002. J later told Gardaí that O’Callaghan would force her to touch him and that on one occasion, he attempted to rape her, but she managed to escape.
Mr. Justice Paul Carney, presiding over the case, ordered that O’Callaghan be placed under supervision for a period of seven years following his release from prison. The judge acknowledged that the offender had reported himself and demonstrated genuine remorse for his actions, factors that were taken into account during sentencing. The case has left a lasting impact on the victims and highlights the grave nature of the crimes committed by Jeremiah O’Callaghan in Cork.
