A violent partner named Jason Winter, aged 34, engaged in a series of abusive actions against his girlfriend. He met his partner on a dating app five years ago and soon became controlling and manipulative.
Winter would physically assault her, including strangulation, and prevent her from leaving their home.
He also set fire to her clothing and belongings stored at his address.
During arguments, he frequently locked her in the house and on one occasion, he grabbed her by the back, pulled her back, and punched her multiple times.
The victim, with an 18-month-old daughter who witnessed the abuse, described an incident where Winter pinned her to the floor, causing her to struggle for breath and cut her skin with her necklace.
The court heard that Winter has a university degree and is considered highly intelligent.
He admitted to two counts of controlling and coercive behaviour and one of intentional strangulation.
He was sentenced to a two-year suspended prison sentence, along with rehabilitation, mental health, and alcohol treatment, and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge and costs.
A five-year restraining order was also imposed to prevent contact with his former partner.
