JASON WHITE FROM SHERBORNE SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOGS IN DORSET

Jason Zachary John White, born on March 4, 1989, and residing at The Plot, Holwell, Sherborne DT9 5LG, was found guilty of severe animal neglect and cruelty involving four large dogs. Over a period of nine months, White kept his dogs confined within cars, subjecting them to what authorities described as 'brutal' treatment, which ultimately led to their rescue and care by the RSPCA.

White pleaded guilty to three counts of failing in his duty as a responsible pet owner to ensure the welfare of his animals. The case was prosecuted by Matthew Knight on behalf of the RSPCA, revealing that at the time of the offenses, White was homeless and living in a car parked in Sherborne. His four dogs—two German Shepherds named Chester and Pickles, and two Huskies named Marley and Teddy—were kept in conditions that were described as neglectful and harmful.

According to the evidence presented, between March 13 and April 22, 2021, White employed harsh and potentially painful or frightening methods to discipline and control his dogs. Witnesses, including a neighbor, reported seeing the animals confined in cars for extended periods, sometimes 24 hours, or tied to gates outside. The neighbor also provided video and audio recordings capturing White shouting aggressively at the dogs and even showing one of them his fist, causing the animal to cower in fear.

On April 22, 2021, authorities, including police and RSPCA officers, responded to reports of animal neglect and found three of the dogs inside a car that had its front seats removed and was missing its wheels. The vehicle's windows were closed, and the interior was covered in feces and urine. The fourth dog was found in a separate car with its window slightly open, also in a state of neglect with similar filth and lack of water or sufficient food. The dogs were seized and taken to a veterinarian for examination.

The vet's assessment confirmed that the dogs had been kept in unacceptable conditions, showing signs of thirst and inadequate nutrition. The treatment inflicted upon the animals was described as 'brutal' and 'counterproductive,' leading to their removal from White's care and placement with the RSPCA. The dogs' suffering was considered severe, and their health was compromised.

During the court proceedings, mitigation was presented by Simon Lacey, who emphasized White's emotional struggles and history of substance abuse. Lacey stated that White's dogs were very important to him and that one of them, Teddy, was suffering from health issues that led to its euthanasia while in RSPCA care. White was present during the euthanasia and held Teddy as it was put down.

Lacey also explained that prior to these events, White had a stable job in Cornwall where his dogs were well cared for. However, due to issues with drugs and alcohol, White moved to Dorset and became homeless, living in his car. His health problems, including a skin condition that sometimes hindered his mobility, contributed to his difficulties in providing proper care.

He acknowledged that White used inappropriate training techniques and physical contact with his dogs but denied any use of weapons or hitting the animals in a manner that would cause harm. The court was told that White has taken steps to improve his life and regrets his past actions, expressing love for his dogs.

In sentencing, the chair of the bench, David Ruston, ordered a disqualification preventing White from owning or keeping a dog for three years, which will expire in May 2025. The remaining three dogs were transferred to the care of the RSPCA. White received a 12-month community order, including 20 days of rehabilitation activities and 120 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £215 and a surcharge. A three-year ban on keeping dogs was imposed, reflecting the seriousness of the neglect and cruelty involved.
