JASON HIGGINS SENTENCED FOR CONTROL, RAPE, AND ASSAULT IN HEMEL HEMPSTEAD

An individual from Hemel Hempstead, Jason Higgins, has been handed a significant prison sentence after being found guilty of multiple serious crimes, including controlling and coercive behavior, two counts of rape, and an assault. The conviction followed an extensive 11-day trial held in October of the previous year, during which the court meticulously examined the evidence and testimonies presented against him.

On January 27, at Huntingdon Crown Court, Judge Bal Dhaliwal-Thomas sentenced Higgins to a term of 17 years in prison. In addition to the custodial sentence, the judge imposed a 20-year restraining order, effectively barring Higgins from making any contact with his victim. This legal measure aims to protect her from further harm and to prevent any form of harassment or intimidation.

The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about Higgins's abusive conduct during his relationship. It was established that he engaged in manipulative and controlling behaviors, which included dictating his former partner’s clothing choices, closely monitoring her interactions with others, and insisting that she remain available on her phone at all times. Such actions are characteristic of coercive control, a form of abuse that can have long-lasting psychological effects.

One particularly alarming incident occurred on April 6, 2024, when Higgins assaulted his partner by forcefully throwing her to the ground and kicking her while she was asleep. This assault resulted in visible bruising and injuries, highlighting the physical danger he posed. The court also heard that when she attempted to end the relationship the following week, Higgins did not accept her decision. Instead, he continued his abusive behavior by bombarding her with relentless calls, text messages, and video messages. His threats included warnings of harm to her and himself if she did not comply with his demands, further illustrating the coercive nature of his actions.

Furthermore, the court found evidence of two counts of rape committed during the course of their relationship. Higgins’s behavior was described as highly manipulative and controlling, with evidence indicating that he even set up a bedroom camera to watch her overnight, an invasion of privacy that added to the severity of his misconduct.

Detective Constable Sue Holmes, who is part of the Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding Unit, expressed her relief that Higgins is now behind bars. She emphasized that his imprisonment prevents him from continuing his pattern of control and abuse. Holmes also highlighted the profound and lasting impact such actions can have on victims and urged anyone experiencing coercive control or sexual violence to seek help. She reassured that support services are available for those in need.

As part of his sentence, Higgins’s name will be registered on the sexual offenders register for life, serving as a stark reminder of the gravity of his crimes.
