JANIS VIZULINS FROM ALLENTON SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT IN DERBY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Janis Vizulins, a 33-year-old man from Grosvenor Street, Allenton, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses that took place in Derby earlier this year. The incident involved the victim, who was under the influence of both alcohol and medication, rendering her highly vulnerable and unable to give informed consent. The Derby Crown Court heard how the victim, whose identity remains protected, initially engaged in some consensual sexual activity with Vizulins at a residence in Derby. However, the situation took a sinister turn when she repeatedly told him to stop and expressed her refusal to continue. Despite her protests, Vizulins persisted, and the victim eventually fell asleep, likely due to the combined effects of alcohol and medication.
What made this case particularly disturbing was the revelation that Vizulins had recorded the assault on her mobile phone. The victim only became aware of the recordings days later when she saw the footage. Overcome with distress, she contacted a friend in tears, confiding in her about what had happened. Her friend advised her to report the incident to the police, which she did promptly.
Prosecutor Gurdial Singh detailed the events, stating that the assault occurred at an address in Derby in January of this year. Both parties had been drinking that evening, and the initial sexual activity was consensual. However, as the night progressed, Vizulins sought to continue and escalate the encounter beyond her consent. Despite her repeated refusals and pleas for him to stop, he ignored her protests and continued his assault while she was unconscious.
Mr. Singh emphasized that the victim had taken medication that impaired her awareness, making her particularly vulnerable. The court was told that after viewing the video recordings, the victim was overwhelmed with emotion and contacted her friend, asking her to come over. She explicitly stated that she did not consent to the sexual acts and that she was under the influence at the time.
Following her report, Vizulins was arrested. Initially, he denied the allegations, claiming he had not raped her. However, he later pleaded guilty to charges of rape and assault by penetration. The court heard that his guilty pleas demonstrated remorse, but the gravity of his actions was clear.
Recorder Graham Huston sentenced Vizulins to four and a half years in prison. Additionally, he imposed a 10-year restraining order preventing Vizulins from contacting the victim and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life. The court's decision underscores the seriousness of the offenses and the need to protect victims from further harm.
