PREDATOR JAILED: MAN WHO RAPED YOUNG GIRL SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS
A man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after repeatedly raping a young girl for his personal sexual gratification.Jamie Shield, from the area of Evenwood near West Auckland, carried out the abuse over several years.
The crime was uncovered when the girl, demonstrating remarkable courage, disclosed the abuse to a trusted adult, leading to an investigation by the South Durham Safeguarding Team.
He faced five charges of rape; he denied the allegations but was convicted of all at Durham Crown Court.
This week, Shield received his sentence alongside a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and was added to the sex offender register.
In court, the victim’s mother delivered a statement describing how her daughter’s mental health has significantly worsened since the abuse, with the girl now experiencing increased low mood.
“I feel her life has been shattered,” she said.
“I will do everything possible to support her, but I don’t think she will ever be the same as she was before these events.” The case was overseen by Detective Sergeant James Woodcock, who worked with specialized intermediaries from the National Crime Agency and the staff at The Meadows Sexual Assault Referral Centre.
He stated: “Their support was vital in gathering evidence to ensure Shield faced justice.
The details of the case were difficult for everyone involved to hear.
“Shield exploited opportunities to offend and showed no remorse.
I commend the bravery and resilience of the victim, whose disclosure was instrumental in securing this conviction.
“My hope is that this outcome will give the victim some peace and help her in her journey toward rebuilding her life.” Sergeant Woodcock encouraged anyone affected by sexual offenses to contact Durham Constabulary at 101, emphasizing that trained officers are available to handle such cases with sensitivity.
