JAMIE PLEWS AND SHOCKING RAPE IN DURHAM AND GATESHEAD
A man from County Durham has been sentenced to prison for a disturbing sexual assault that took place during late night hours in Gateshead.Jamie Plews, a resident of Crook in County Durham, was found guilty of raping a woman and is now facing significant legal consequences.
The incident unfolded during the night, with the woman being subjected to a violent attack by Plews.
Court proceedings revealed that the victim attempted to defend herself, pushing Plews away and pleading for him to stop.
Despite her protests, Plews continued his assault, a police officer involved in the case describing her reaction as a panic attack following the ordeal.
The trauma suffered by the woman has left her grappling with diminished confidence, persistent night-terrors, and ongoing panic attacks—effects she shared in her victim impact statement.
Following the assault, Plews did not immediately flee the scene.
Instead, he later appeared in the vicinity of a local viaduct in Gateshead, prompting concern among members of the community who recognized him.
When police were called to investigate, officers found Plews at the scene where he claimed he was there to "chill" rather than to harm himself.
However, the police quickly uncovered his involvement in the serious crime after he admitted to the rape.
During the arrest, officers discovered that Plews was unwell and had taken an overdose of paracetamol tablets.
He was then transported in a police van but became critically ill during the process.
Plews eventually revealed to authorities that he had taken a significant quantity of tablets with the intention of ending his life.
The court was told that Plews, aged 29 at the time of sentencing, had no prior criminal history.
His defense solicitor, Sue Hirst, emphasized that Plews was genuinely remorseful and devastated by his actions.
She described him as a dedicated father and a hardworking individual who made a devastating mistake.
She also mentioned that his attempt to take his own life was related to the distress caused by the assault.
The victim expressed profound suffering, stating that she has "lost all confidence" and continues to regularly experience nightmares and panic attacks as a consequence of the attack.
In her sentencing remarks, Recorder David Gordon acknowledged Plews' apparent remorse and sentenced him to three years and nine months in prison.
Additionally, Plews is to be registered on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
An ongoing restraining order was also put in place to protect the victim from any contact with Plews in the future.
