DERBY OFFENDER JAMIE BIRKS'S BRUTAL CRIMES INCLUDING ASSAULT AND THREATS ON POLICE AND PARAMEDICS

Jamie Birks, a notorious figure in Derby, has a long history of violent and threatening behavior that culminated in a series of serious offences during the year 2020. The Derby Crown Court was informed of his disturbing actions, which included threatening to harm others with a machete, physically assaulting his girlfriend inside a taxi, and making dangerous threats against emergency personnel.

According to court proceedings, Birks’s pattern of violent conduct was extensive and alarming. He had previously resided in Chaddesden but was at the time of his offences without a fixed address, indicating a period of instability. His criminal activities on that year ranged from resisting arrest to outright threats of lethal violence.

One of the most troubling incidents involved Birks threatening a female paramedic by declaring he would shoot her, and if police officers intervened, he would shoot them as well. This threat underscored his blatant disregard for authority and the safety of emergency responders. During an altercation on Normanton Road, Birks attempted to headbutt a police officer and spat at him after resisting arrest, further demonstrating his aggressive resistance to law enforcement.

In addition to these violent threats and assaults, Birks also committed theft by stealing a sack truck from a homelessness hostel where he was staying at the time. His criminal record is extensive, with over 70 previous convictions, reflecting a long-standing pattern of antisocial behavior.

The judge, Martin Hurst, sentenced Birks to two years in prison, emphasizing the severity of his conduct during 2020. The judge stated, “During 2020 you behaved extremely badly. You made threats to kill, assaulted your girlfriend, and threatened to shoot a street paramedic. All these people are trying to help you and it is not acceptable for you to lash out in the way you do. These people need to be protected, you have a habit of lashing out at authority.”

The prosecution, led by Siward James-Moore, detailed Birks’s initial offence on February 6, 2020, when he was arrested along with his brother following an incident on Normanton Road, during which they resisted arrest. His subsequent offences included calling a probation officer and threatening to obtain a machete to harm others. The threats extended to a street paramedic, whom he told he would shoot.

The assault on his girlfriend occurred after a taxi ride from a restaurant on Normanton Road, during which Birks began punching her repeatedly in the back seat. The taxi driver, concerned for her safety, called the police. Birks pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, malicious communication, making threats to kill, theft, and assaulting an emergency worker.

His defense, represented by Mark Watson, acknowledged his troubled history and substance abuse issues, including crack cocaine and Mamba use at the time of the offences. Despite his plea, the court recognized the danger posed by Birks’s actions and sentenced him accordingly, aiming to protect the community from further harm.
