A man has received a prison sentence after being convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in Brighton.James Scott, aged 45, approached a woman in the St James’s Street area who was not familiar to him.
Eyewitnesses observed Scott engaging in a sexual assault on the vulnerable woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
After the incident, she was taken to hospital and received support from specially-trained officers.
Scott, who does not have a fixed address, stood trial at Lewes Crown Court in December and was convicted on three counts of sexual assault.
On 5 December, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for these crimes.
The court was told that the incident occurred around 11am on June 7, 2025.
Witnesses described the victim, a woman in her twenties, as being in a precarious state.
Scott was observed grabbing her, attempting to upright her, and giving her alcohol.
He committed sexual assault while she was partly unconscious and without her consent.
When witnesses confronted him, Scott claimed that the woman was his girlfriend.
However, it was established that the two had not previously met.
