JAMES MCDONELL OF DUNDEE LEAVES CATS TO STARVE TO DEATH IN HORRIFIC CRUELTY CASE

James Donald McDonell, born on 14 November 1997 and residing at 5D Robertson Street in Dundee, has been found guilty of causing the unnecessary suffering and death of two beloved cats, Mia and Babe.

The tragic incident unfolded between July and August 2019, when the animals were discovered under a duvet in his home, suffering from severe weight loss and suspected dehydration, which ultimately led to their deaths.

Authorities responded to reports of animal neglect at McDonell’s residence in Dundee and conducted a thorough investigation.

Upon entering the property, they found the two cats already deceased, lying beneath a duvet cover.

The investigation revealed that McDonell had failed to seek veterinary assistance or provide adequate care for Mia and Babe during the critical period from July 12 to August 2, 2019, for one cat, and from July 24 to August 2, 2019, for the other.

This neglect resulted in the animals suffering immensely, with their bodies showing signs of starvation and dehydration.

During the court proceedings, it was disclosed that McDonell was experiencing personal difficulties at the time, which contributed to his neglectful behavior.

The court heard that he was struggling with mental health issues, which he claimed affected his ability to care for the animals properly.

His defense solicitor, Ross Donnelly, acknowledged these challenges but emphasized that McDonell has since taken steps to improve his mental health and get his life back on track.

Despite this, the court condemned his actions, highlighting the cruelty involved in leaving defenseless animals to suffer in such a manner.

McDonell pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering to the cats by neglect.

As part of his sentencing, he was admonished, meaning he was given a stern warning but not imprisoned, provided he maintains good behavior moving forward.

Additionally, he was banned from owning any animals for a period of five years, a restriction that will remain in effect until January 2026.

It was also noted that McDonell, who performs as a drag queen under the stage name Raspberry, sometimes styled as Rasp Berry, continued to perform publicly as his alter ego during the period when his cats were suffering and starving.

This detail has raised questions about his mental state and the sincerity of his claims of turmoil at the time of the offense.

The case has sparked outrage among animal welfare advocates and the local community in Dundee, emphasizing the importance of accountability and compassion towards animals.
