DONCASTER MAN JAILED FOR 'FRENZIED' ATTACK ON EX-PARTNER
A Doncaster man has been jailed after committing a violent and extended assault that resulted in multiple serious injuries to his ex-partner.James Maughan, aged 29 and detained at HMP Doncaster, admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent on August 8.
He was sentenced to six and a half years in prison during a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court.
The court heard that in September 2022, Maughan had issued several violent threats over a period of weeks to the victim and her family before carrying out a lengthy, frenzied assault at a residence in Doncaster.
During the attack, Maughan restrained the woman, tried to suffocate her, submerged her head underwater, and forced her to ingest a packet of tablets.
The victim suffered injuries including a fractured knee, broken ribs, and a chipped tooth.
She begged Maughan to release her and managed to persuade him to allow her to call a taxi.
The evidence was bolstered by the taxi driver’s insistence on taking her to hospital and the victim’s bravery in reporting her injuries to a nurse, which helped police build their case.
At the time, Maughan was on license after serving time for dangerous driving in March 2016.
In an attempt to intimidate her further, Maughan visited the victim at her home during the case.
Fearing for her safety after the attack, the victim’s case was taken on by the CPS.
Officer PC Larissa Porter was recognized for her role in supporting the victim and advancing the case.
The judge praised the victim for her bravery in court and giving evidence, and the taxi driver for his compassion and assistance in getting her medical help.
Detective Sergeant Kath Coulter stated that the prison sentence reflects a strong commitment to supporting domestic abuse victims and ensuring justice against offenders.
