JAMES DOYLE AND NEIL DUNKEL SENTENCED IN NEWARK FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ABUSE CRIMES
Two men, James Doyle and Neil Dunkel, have been handed lengthy prison sentences after being convicted of serious historical sexual abuse offenses in Newark. James Doyle, who is 62 years old and previously lived in Newark, was found guilty of multiple heinous crimes that spanned over an eight-year period. His offenses included seven counts of rape, causing sexual activity, and assaulting a young girl by touching her inappropriately. The first of these assaults was committed when the victim was only 13 years old, and another victim was just 11 years old at the time. The severity of Doyle’s actions was underscored by the investigating officer, PC David Turnbull, who described Doyle’s conduct as “pure evil.”During the trial, it was revealed that Doyle conspired with Neil Dunkel, a 67-year-old man also linked to Newark. Dunkel was convicted of two counts of rape after being invited to an address by Doyle, which facilitated the commission of these crimes. The trial, which lasted three weeks in November, was emotionally taxing for the victims, who were compelled to relive their traumatic experiences during court proceedings. Throughout the trial, both Doyle and Dunkel denied their involvement and lied about their actions, attempting to obscure the truth.
In sentencing, Judge James Sampson described Doyle as “undoubtedly dangerous” and a “significant risk to girls,” emphasizing the brutality and gravity of the crimes committed. Doyle was sentenced to 30 years in prison, with a requirement to serve at least two-thirds of that term before being eligible for parole. Additionally, he will be subject to a four-year extended license period upon release. Dunkel received a 12-year prison sentence for his role in the offenses. Both men will be registered on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of their activities.
PC Turnbull, who was involved in the investigation, highlighted the seriousness of Doyle’s actions and the importance of delivering justice. He noted that both offenders showed no remorse for their crimes and forced their victims to relive their trauma during the court process. The case underscores the bravery of the victims who came forward to seek justice despite the profound emotional toll involved.
