HACKNEY PREDATOR JAMEL NWOKOYE SENTENCED FOR ATTACKING WOMAN WITH RAPE INTENT

In a serious case that has shocked the Hackney community, Jamel Nwokoye, a 30-year-old man from Coronet Street, was convicted and subsequently sentenced for a brutal assault that involved an attempted sexual offence. The incident took place in the early hours of April 27, 2018, and the legal proceedings culminated in a court hearing at the Central Criminal Court in July, where Nwokoye was found guilty of assault with intent to commit a sexual offence.

On Friday, September 6, Nwokoye received a prison sentence of four years. Additionally, he was handed an extended license period of four years, meaning he will be under supervision for a total of eight years post-release. The court also mandated that he sign the sex offenders register for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the potential risk he poses to the public.

The court heard that shortly after 2:00 a.m. on the night of the attack, Nwokoye began following a 28-year-old woman as she was walking alone along Pitfield Street in Hackney. Witnesses described how, as she approached the pedestrian entrance to Shoreditch Park, Nwokoye suddenly ran up behind her. He grabbed her hair and dragged her into the darker, more secluded area of the park. The victim struggled fiercely against her attacker, but Nwokoye responded with violent aggression, repeatedly punching and kicking her in the face and body as he continued to pull her further into the shadows.

Several members of the public, who overheard the woman’s screams for help, entered the park in an attempt to intervene and called the police. Despite her resistance, the woman managed to wrestle free after several minutes and fled the scene. Nwokoye also fled, disappearing into the night. The police investigation was launched swiftly, with detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Central East CID analyzing extensive CCTV footage. The footage clearly showed Nwokoye following the victim and tracking his movements around the area for approximately 45 minutes.

Further investigation led to the identification of Nwokoye’s home address, and he was subsequently arrested on May 2, 2018. During the investigation, authorities uncovered disturbing evidence from his mobile phone, revealing a history of accessing extreme pornographic material that depicted forced sex and violence against women. This evidence was considered significant in understanding his motives and the potential danger he posed.

Following his arrest, Nwokoye was charged with assault with intent to commit a sexual offence, specifically rape. The court heard that the prosecution’s case was based on the fact that Nwokoye’s actions and intentions were aimed at committing a sexual offence of a particularly heinous nature. In his sentencing remarks, HHJ Dodds emphasized that the sentence was based on the fact that the sexual offence Nwokoye intended to commit was rape, underscoring the gravity of his actions and the threat he posed to women in Hackney and beyond.
