AMERICAN POEADOPHILE SENTENCED IN CARDIFF FOR ONLINE GROOMING AND WEAPONS POSSESSION
A man from the United States involved in child sexual abuse online has been convicted after traveling to Wales with the intent to meet his young victim. He was detained at Cardiff Airport after authorities in the UK and US collaborated to foil his plans.
Officers found him carrying knives and a cosh, leading to his arrest.
Jacob Ewing, aged 44, engaged in conversations with a girl from Caerphilly who was 15 at the time.
He coerced her into recording sexual acts, dictated her clothing and diet, and streamed her sleeping on live videos to his device.
During a court hearing at Newport Crown Court, it was revealed that Ewing, from North Carolina, initially contacted the girl through a chat site called Emerald, claiming he was a paedophile hunter and a Christian.
He later obtained her Snapchat details, and their communication shifted to video calls.
Ewing asked her to keep her camera active overnight, during which he admitted to masturbating while watching her sleep, an act she found disturbing.
Ewing continued to bombard her with messages, pressured her into being his girlfriend despite her initial refusal, and began controlling her behaviour.
As their relationship moved further into sexual coercion, he asked her about her clothing and planned to manipulate her further, even demanding she show him her body while she was asleep.
He displayed a firearm during their interactions and claimed to have harmed his mother after he was out of contact, later stating he had been imprisoned.
On some occasions, another man appeared on the video link, and Ewing falsely accused the victim of enjoying degrading treatment and speaking to other paedophiles.
The victim later discovered Ewing had tattooed her initials on her chest and became increasingly obsessed with her.
He pressured her to remove her clothes during live videos, leading her to comply out of fear, while Ewing masturbated and used sex toys on himself, which she found distressing.
The situation worsened as the victim became overwhelmed by frequent missed calls and feared her images and videos might be shared.
Ewing expressed his desire to travel to the UK after her 16th birthday, talking about marriage and children and claiming he would work in the UK and stay at her home.
Both wore rings, pretending they were married.
Ewing arrived in the UK from Georgia, via Amsterdam, last year but was detained by the UK Border Force following intelligence from US police.
He possessed multiple knives, a wooden cosh, and a ring engraved with his victim's initials.
Devices seized included a phone and laptop containing extreme indecent images, including those depicting a baby being raped.
Ewing pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including causing and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, possession of indecent images, and possession of offensive weapons.
Despite these serious offences, he was described as previously of good character.
In a victim impact statement, the girl expressed distress about the manipulation, control, and threats she endured, which affected her sleep, mental health, and sense of safety.
Her mother also gave a statement, detailing her concerns about her daughter's mental health, attempts at self-harm, and the impact Ewing's actions had on their family.
The court heard mitigation from the defendant's solicitor, who emphasised Ewing's history of moving to care for his ill father and considered the offence isolated.
Judge Celia Hughes sentenced Ewing to nearly 8 years in prison, imposed indefinite sex offender notification, and ordered a 10-year restraining and Harm Prevention Order.
Following sentencing, Detective Superintendent Philip O’Connell highlighted the effective international cooperation that prevented further harm and praised the resilience of the victim.
He encouraged others who might be victims or witnesses to come forward, reassuring them their concerns would be taken seriously and handled with care.
