JACOB BUTLER FROM MOSTYN SENTENCED IN FLINTSHIRE FOR BREACHING SEXUAL HARM PREVENTION ORDER
In a case that highlights ongoing concerns about compliance with court orders related to sexual offenses, Jacob Paul Butler, a resident of Coast Road in Mostyn, was brought before Caernarfon Crown Court in February 2021 to face sentencing for breaching a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).Butler, aged 22 at the time, had been subject to the SHPO since 2019, a legal restriction designed to prevent him from engaging in certain behaviors related to sexual offenses. The court was informed that prior to his sentencing, Butler had already admitted to breaching the order on multiple occasions, specifically between December 17, 2020, and January 14, 2021.
The prosecution, led by Richard Edwards, outlined that Butler had purchased a new mobile phone in mid-December. An app was installed on the device to allow his offender manager to monitor his online activity, a standard measure to ensure compliance with the restrictions imposed by the SHPO. However, just a week into January, authorities noticed that the phone had not been used online since before the New Year, raising suspicions.
Upon investigation, officers discovered that the monitoring app’s settings had been altered. Initially, Butler denied any tampering with the device, but subsequent admissions revealed that he had used the phone to watch pornography. He admitted to deleting his internet history afterward, claiming he did so out of shame for the amount of material he had viewed.
The court was made aware that Butler has a troubling criminal history, with 25 offenses across eight convictions, including multiple sex offenses involving children. His repeated breaches of the SHPO underscored a pattern of non-compliance and disregard for court orders.
Judge Nicola Jones addressed Butler directly, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions. She stated, “There was a prohibition that you not delete the internet history — you were well aware of that. You denied tampering with the device and then admitted it.”
Ultimately, the court sentenced Jacob Butler to a two-year custodial sentence, reflecting the gravity of his breaches and the need to protect the community from further offenses. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to court-imposed restrictions and the consequences of failing to do so.
