IVAN WEST FROM CLEY AND HOLT SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN NORWICH
In a case that has shocked the local communities of Cley and Holt, Ivan West, an 86-year-old resident of The Fairstead in Cley, was ultimately sentenced to a significant prison term after being found guilty of multiple child sex offences. The conviction was handed down at Norwich Crown Court following a detailed four-day trial that captivated public attention and highlighted the severity of the allegations.West faced a total of ten charges, which included nine counts of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency. These charges stemmed from abusive acts committed over a span of nearly a decade, specifically between the years 1972 and 1981. The victims, three young girls, were subjected to these heinous acts at various addresses in Buxton and Heavingham, locations that are well-known within the Norfolk area. The jury, after careful deliberation, found West guilty of all charges, marking a significant victory for justice in this case.
Following the verdict, West was sentenced on Friday, June 1, 2018, to serve a total of 12 years in prison. Additionally, he was subjected to an extended licence period of one year, which means that even after serving his prison sentence, he will be under supervision for an extended period to ensure public safety. The court's decision underscores the gravity of the offences and the need to protect vulnerable individuals from potential harm.
Earlier in April 2018, West had been convicted of similar offences related to three girls, with charges dating back to 1973. During that trial, he was found guilty of nine counts of indecent assault and one of gross indecency, although he was cleared of a rape charge involving a girl under 16. The jury in that case reached their verdict in just under two and a half hours, indicating the strength of the evidence against him.
Despite the convictions, West maintained his innocence, denying all allegations throughout the proceedings. Judge Stephen Holt, in his sentencing remarks, decided to adjourn the sentencing hearing until May 25 to allow for reports to be prepared. He also granted West bail, citing an act of compassion to enable him to manage his personal affairs. However, the judge issued a stern warning that West faced the possibility of imprisonment, emphasizing the seriousness of the crimes committed and the need for justice to be served.
