IVAN SILVA AND JESSICA BLAND FROM SHEFFIELD CONVICTED OVER HORRIFIC ANIMAL CRUELTY CASE INVOLVING SKELETAL DOG

In a disturbing case of animal neglect that has shocked the Sheffield community, Ivan Silva and Jessica Bland, both residents of Sheffield, have been found guilty of severe animal cruelty charges. The case centered around their treatment of a dog named Turner, who was discovered in a deplorable state within their home on Abbeyfield Road, Sheffield S4 7AY.

Ivan Silva, born on September 18, 1965, and Jessica Bland, born circa 1975, faced the court after an investigation by the RSPCA revealed the extent of their neglect. The investigation was initiated following reports that their bull-breed dog, Turner, was being severely neglected and living in squalid conditions. The authorities responded promptly, leading to an inspection of the property where the dog was kept.

When Inspector Kim Greaves arrived at the residence, she was met with a distressing scene. The property was filled with a strong smell of ammonia and general filth, and a large swarm of flies was visible around the door. Concerned about the welfare of the dog, Inspector Greaves requested to see Turner. Jessica Bland, the owner, went inside to retrieve the dog and brought him outside after several minutes.

Turner was found to be in a critically neglected state. The inspector described him as being extremely underweight, with his spine, ribs, and hip bones clearly visible. The dog's collar was noted to be excessively loose, raising concerns that he could easily escape if he chose to back out of it. Turner exhibited signs of malnutrition, with patchy fur loss, a tacky and dirty coat, and a foul odor. The dog was also squinting, likely adjusting to the bright outdoor light.

Following the inspection, Bland consented to the RSPCA taking Turner to a veterinary clinic for a thorough examination. An independent veterinarian assessed the dog and confirmed that Turner was severely underweight for his breed, weighing only 34 kilograms. The vet noted that his skull, ribs, spine, and pelvic bones were protruding, indicating significant malnutrition. Turner was given a body condition score of just 2 out of 9, with 1 being the lowest possible score. The vet also observed that Turner was fearful and cowering when approached, with additional health issues including alopecia and a flea infestation.

Jessica Bland pleaded guilty to two offences related to animal welfare, specifically for failing to meet the needs of Turner. Ivan Silva, on the other hand, admitted to breaching a previous court order—a court-imposed eight-year ban on keeping animals, which was handed down in 2015. Silva's breach of this ban was a significant factor in the case.

Turner remains under the care of the RSPCA Sheffield Animal Centre. Thanks to the efforts of the veterinary team and staff at the centre, the dog has shown remarkable improvement. Within just a few days of receiving care, Turner gained 2.2 kilograms and continued to progress well. The RSPCA hopes to find him a loving new home now that the legal proceedings have concluded.

Inspector Kim Greaves commented on Turner's recovery, stating, “Turner came on really well in just a few days under veterinary care. He has gained weight and is making good progress. We are hopeful that he will soon find a caring family to give him the love and attention he deserves.”

Sentencing for Jessica Bland included a fine of £150 in costs and a five-year ban on keeping animals, which will expire in July 2026. Despite her conviction, Bland was permitted to retain ownership of her four cats. Ivan Silva’s breach of his previous animal ban was also acknowledged during the proceedings, highlighting the seriousness of his actions.

This case has once again brought to light the importance of animal welfare and the need for strict enforcement of laws designed to protect vulnerable animals in Sheffield and beyond.
