'AGGRESSIVE' THUG WHO STABBED PARTNER SO HARD KNIFE BROKE JAILED

A man from Leeds has received a prison sentence after attacking his partner with a knife, which broke during the assault.

Ingus Galaskis, aged 37, was acquitted of attempting to murder his partner following a trial at Leeds Crown Court last month.

However, he had previously admitted to causing grievous bodily harm by wounding her during a frightening attack that involved stabbing her repeatedly.

The court was informed that the incident occurred in Baileys Crescent, Seacroft, on September 3 of the previous year, after the woman asked Galaskis to leave her home.

Prosecutor Angus McDonald opened the case by explaining that the woman had been holidaying in Latvia and upon her return, she found the house in disarray with alcohol spilled on the floor.

He described how Galaskis had been aggressive and shouted at her, expressing surprise that she had returned that day.

The woman instructed him to rest upstairs, suggesting they would talk the next morning.

Jurors learned that Galaskis went upstairs, while the woman took the chance to call her mother.

Later, Galaskis returned, still displaying anger, and was again told to leave, which he did.

He then went back upstairs briefly, leaving with his rucksack, before coming back about 40 minutes later.

According to the prosecutor, Galaskis re-entered the property, and the woman, injured, went to sleep on a downstairs bed.

She put her phone on airplane mode and began to rest, but was abruptly awoken when he entered the kitchen aggressively.

She believed nothing of it initially, but the prosecution argued that she was asleep and defenseless before he attacked her with a knife.

She was lying on the sofa unaware of the attack until she felt pain as he stabbed her arm.

She quickly realised it was caused by a knife, and that he was inflicting injuries on her.

The court heard that Galaskis stabbed her multiple times until the knife shattered, with parts of the blade becoming lodged inside her body.

He eventually noticed the knife had broken and went to the kitchen, at which point the woman managed to escape and call for help from neighbors.

Galaskis was detained at the scene after a neighbor, who went inside, reported hearing him say, “I'm going to jail.” On November 28, he appeared in court and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
